So I got to thinking today “I wish I could filters out all the fluff from twitter and get the things I wanna know about”. I use Google Alerts to alert me of various topics, mentions of my name and mentions of my website urls. Technorati does a good job of this too. Since I started Twitter I’ve been looking for a way to build custom alerts when people mention something of importance.

Today I was searching around and paulmwatson.com came up with a solution to my problem. I thought i’d share it with you in howto format:

Supplies:

Directions:

  1. Go to your twitter page you want to capture: http://twitter.com/yourusernamehere/with_friends (replace yourusernamehere with your twitter username) From here scroll to the bottom and look for RSS Feed, copy this url to your clipboard.
  2. Go to http://feedrinse.com/ and create an account
  3. Click the Add Feeds link.
  4. Paste in the URL from your clipboard to the Add Feeds text box.
  5. Specify the filter conditions you’d like to use:
  6. Click Save Changes after adding in the condtions
  7. Right click and copy the URL of the RSS feed that FeedRinse creates for you:
  8. You can now paste this URL into your RSS reader and see all the filtered content.

Now the way I have this one setup if just for my friends so I dont miss anything. You can also do this for the whole twitter public timeline using this RSS Feed address: http://twitter.com/statuses/public_timeline.rss.

If you have any questions, suggestions or comments please feel free to leave a comment in this post.
